Evolution of a Reiki Book Cover

Evolution of a book cover - Tuesday May Thomas

©tuesdaymaythomas
As mentioned in this month's loveletter blog, it was four years ago that I released my first novel 'Confessions of a Spiritual Apprentice' (original book cover on the upper left). Since then the book has undergone a series of changes as you can see.

The first cover was controversial because no one could figure out the title of the book. I thought this added a mysterious quality to my work. I kinda felt like it created a spiritual gateway of sorts that noted 'only those who can make out the book's title are the ones to read it'! This is all very 'artsy', yet I realized when you want people to buy and read your book, it is nice when they do not have to work so hard to figure out the title! I considered creating a new book cover and a title that speaks more directly to the content in the book.

My book is an autobiography. I did not know it would be so thrilling and at the same time scary and debilitating to air my most sacred vulnerabilities for the world to view. Cut to three years later. I had fallen apart at the seems and underwent a massive depression only to rise again. As I rose, I created my mini book The Nowosphere.

In my uprising, I felt I had to take myself out of the book and give the leading character (me) a pseudonym. "I just don't identify with that version of myself any longer" I heard myself tell friends when talking about the impending changes to my book. I went so far as to change my name to 'Summer' in the book (my when I go to Starbucks name) and started to think about a new book cover.

During this time my dear best friend and cat of seventeen years passed away. Upon his passing, he planted a seed within me. He said (and those of you who have pets know they can telepathically talk to you and vice versa) "Mom, change the title of the book to 'The Reiki Apprentice' and make the cover look like this"... He showed me a hand with a cho ku rei symbol in the palm.

I decided to yes, listen to the cat and republish the book with a new title: 'The Reiki Apprentice', and I even reclaimed my past and decided to put myself back in the book as 'Tuesday'. Yet I ignored what the cat had told me in lieu of creating the new cover with the hand & cho ku rei.

I had begun following a big shot 'indie author' who encouraged a lot of flashy marketing. Despite the cat's guidance for the new book cover, I decided to republish the book with the fancy blue cover (the middle book cover, above). I thought, according to my new author guru that this is the way to go as far as grabbing a reader's attention and making them want to buy the book.

There was much excitement in republishing a book that sprawls my innermost vulnerabilities out for the world to see. I had hidden. I had grown. I had healed and was now ready to really get behind this book and promote it. Yet when I republished it with the new 'blue' cover, something was amiss. It just did not feel right. The book did not feel fully activated in its power and ready for take-off again. I knew right away the cat was right. I had chosen the incorrect cover to republish with. F#*! I had allowed the fancy marketing fluff of my new author mentor to skew the truth I knew in my heart all along.

I know, I can blame the fancy indie author I was following- but really there is no blame, there is only the course correction to a greater truth. In fact, I knew the truth the whole time. I knew the book's correct and true cover was supposed to be the hand and the cho ku rei.  I just decided to go around learning that lesson the long way. With it, I have gained much insight about integrity and the value of living an authentic, creative life. I could not get behind my book as long as the 'untrue' book cover was circulating.

Now the whole package of my book is here (book cover on the right, above). Third times a charm :) and the funny thing is the story has been untouched over the years, besides the brief interval of exchanging my name for 'Summer', for a quick minute. The story inside my book has never changed, only the outside.

I am excited to announce the outside of my book finally matches the inside. Hooray! Now the book is in its full power and authority. Now we are ready to rock n roll, so to speak- and share the teachings within its pages with the world... I celebrate my book The Reiki Apprentice in all of its glory! I thank each and every one of you who has supported me and purchased this book through all of its incarnations.

Moral of the story; you always know the truth by the way it feels.

Create Ceremony for Reiki Healing- Make Sacred Space

©Tuesday May Thomas
Consciously creating a sacred space in which to practice and perform Reiki Healing, whether it is simply for self-practice, or in service to others is a mindful consideration and an act of ceremony.

Indeed creating a sacred space for Reiki Healing is a mindful method I have taken on as a formal part of my ongoing 'practice'.

What does it mean to you- to make sacred space? To me, it means doing what I am guided to 'do' by my higher self and or 'Reiki' in order to acknowledge and affirm the presence of light and love in the midst of the space I will be working in. Sometimes that means burning sage, laying out crystals, creating a bubble of light,  the visualization of Reiki symbols, and more.

Funny thing is, I recall my Reiki teacher not once going out of her way to 'create sacred space' for a Reiki Healing. I spent years apprenticing with her, whereby I shared Reiki Healing with her weekly, received Reiki from her quarterly (she would gift the masters in our small group a Reiki session every four months or so as a tune-up), and I facilitated Reiki Healing with her for others in their homes, and in hospitals.

She was not one to burn sage, hit the drum, lay out crystals, say 'cho ku rei', play dolphin music, or wave a feather. Not one single feather! Though I do remember one time (and one time only in the space of three years) she brought an amethyst and laid it upon a young boy we were working on. Outside of this 'one-time crystal use during Reiki', she instead used to do this thing called 'put a vhs into the video player' (yes that's how far back we are going).

Either I or she would lay upon her couch with the crown of our head at the arm-side edge, propped up on pillows. That's right, no healing table here... just a comfy couch and an 80's video playing in the background. All of this occurred in the living room of her Brooklyn apartment, in quite a nonchalant fashion.

While this experience served as a blueprint for holding space while serving Reiki Healing, it was not my style, though I now understand the 'meaning of the vhs work' we were doing and what was happening on a much bigger scale with my teacher. Keep reading to find out!...

As my own Reiki Master-ship evolved I found myself living alone in a two-bedroom apartment. The spare bedroom became the 'healing room'. I had many clients and students coming and going through my home. I loved feeling the freedom and creativity to make sacred space for all of our interactions.

I wanted to have a special zone in which we did our work together. So I manifested a healing table which was always set up in the middle of the healing room. I painted the walls a clear golden color, placed light chiffon curtains on the windows with maybe one piece of art on the walls. It was simple. There was a small altar with a candle, sage, and a few crystals- and that was it.

I used the kitchen as a space for introductions, tea, and talk/counsel and then I would walk my students and clients through the living room to the special healing room dedicated only to serving Reiki Healing. I liked it that way.

Over the years I have facilitated Reiki in many spaces and there has always been a powerful draw to activate the energy of a space before the actual exchange of Reiki takes place, whether it is with one student or client, or a group of thirty. This said, anytime I am guided to share Reiki and an 'invocation/activation' as such is not consciously created, the Reiki exchange is just as powerful without it. Why? Reiki itself creates scared space where ever it is intended and honored. While I love making sacred space, I see now how my teacher's approach to simply getting down with the practice of Reiki was always enough.

In thinking on this, it seems the act of making sacred space is all about orienting our own energy in way of aligning ourselves with the holy and sacred quality of healing we will be facilitating and exchanging. To make sacred space is to bring us into direct contact with that which we are, and with what we will be participating in; that being submerging into the experience of pure unconditional love.

So before we get into some ideas on how to make sacred space, I want to finish painting the picture of my teachers' 'vhs work'  I mentioned above. You see, when it was my turn to receive Reiki she would invite me into her office where a huge bookshelf of videos was on display. It was up to me to pick out a video for my healing journey.

Though I would often fall asleep while she lay hands on me, what I came to understand was my subconscious was really the part of me that picked the video out. That was a part of me that was getting worked on while I lay down to receive. The storylines in the film were just reflecting ideas I held deep within to be 'worked on' and healed, for the highest good.

MAKE SACRED SPACE
Here are some ideas to make sacred space for your Reiki Healing experience.

1. The cho ku rei (or any other Reiki Symbol) is a perfect way to activate and prime the energy of a space and make it sacred. Whether you are facilitating a workshop or one to one exchange on Meditation, Yoga, Reiki or any other modality you can draw the cho ku rei energetically with your mind's eye, hand, or finger on the walls, ceiling and floor of the space and room you will be sharing in.  I also like to imagine/hang a HUGE cho ku rei in the middle of the space too- like an energy chandelier.

2. Burn sage; a)Walk the parameters of the space and pay special attention to saging the entrance and exits. b) Sage each participant or your client as a part of your exchange. I almost always include saging my clients as a part of the opening and closing of a one to one Reiki Healing. And I always walk the circle and sage each participant in a group I may be sharing Reiki Healing with at the beginning of a Workshop. I do this as a means to create ceremony and as an offering to bring each participant into their spiritual awareness for our day together. Besides being used as an offering, sage 'resets' & primes the energy of a space and acts as a powerful clearing agent for stagnant or funky energy. This said it is nice to burn sage to simply as an offering of the earthly medicine to the space you will be 'working' in.

3. Call in your Reiki Guides, Angels, Loved Ones that have Passed, and Animal Totems. Invite your client/students to do the same. At the beginning of a session, I take a still and concentrated moment to invite in all those light beings who love us unconditionally and I invite participants to do the same silently within.

In a workshop setting, you can invite participants to speak their 'invites' aloud, as they are guided- there is never a force to do anything someone does not want to. You will feel the room filling up with the presence of those most-high beings who hold love and love for us! At the end of the session or workshop take a conscious moment to speak gratitude aloud for 'their' blessed offering of holding space for the most-high healing for one and all.

4. Use a 'Community Stone or Crystal' in the space of healing. This may be used as a tool that recipients can
utilize if they like, or it can simply hold space within the space where healing takes place. I use a community stone of Rose Quartz (click to view my Instagram of cleansing this sacred stone), meaning it is used with clients during reiki healing, and as a talking stone (instead of a talking stick) when I facilitate gatherings. Since it is a community stone I do not program it with 'personal' intentions. Rather it is invited to bring blessings of service, extending maximally charged gifts of its inherent healing qualities to one and all. It likes to be cleansed with sea salt in the sunshine quite often ♥ .

There are so many ways you can make sacred space- allow your higher self and Reiki to show you what to do. And be reminded that whenever and wherever you place love, and intend Reiki, the space of sacredness is created as a beautiful by-product through simply acknowledging Reiki and allowing it to flow. ©Tuesday May Thomas

The 'Dai Ko Myo' Reiki symbol and Level Three Reiki attunement

Dai Ko Myo

©TuesdayMayThomas

In the Usui Shiki Ryoho Lineage I am attuned with and teach, Level Three Reiki is associated with one symbol- 'DAI KO MYO' pronounced (die- ko- meeo). It relates specifically to the spiritual body, self realization and the direct experience of ones heart opening.

Level Three activates the heart chackra (bridge between higher and lower centers) and may serve to deepen your hearts experience in every area of life. It is like opening your heart without limits, and with the protection of even greater detachment. This attunement acts as the training wheels for the Master Level.

In my lineage Dia Ko Myo/ Level Three is the attunement that comes before Raku/Master Level. It serves an awakening within the student and brings them to a great respect for the deepened potency of ones thoughts actions, words and deeds. In many ways, this attunement acts as training wheels for the student to learn how to hold space as a Master weather they plan on being a Reiki teacher or simply using the Master Level to master their life.

Level Three is all about living from the truth of your heart. Besides opening your channels that more life force flow through you with ease, your ability to heal your life and allow your life to be healed is expanded exponentially. Your ability to channel, receive & 'hold' greater love, life-force, celestial nourishment, and joy in your body vehicle is activated. Your ability to equally give/gift- love, life force, celestial nourishment & joy- in larger ways comes with even greater grace.

With disciplined regular self-hands-on work (even a weekly practice goes a long way), your personal fountain of life force overflows, and connects you with the inexhaustible god-source/love-force of all life. This means the 'space' you then 'give energy' from is of that which overflows with ease, not from your personal reserves of energy.

With Level Three, ones energy within, and all around- shifts to a new vibrational octave and the world watches and awaits, as you become the exemplifier of a new marked freedom. Ring the bell of liberation for others through the words and deeds you share in the world. YOU are the teacher unfolding.

There are a handful of Dai Ko Myo symbols a Master may use to attune a student with. In my 16 years of passing attunements I have used three variations. The version at the top of this post is the one I have been guided to use predominantly in attunements for the past three years.

The version below in pink was channeled by Diane Stein and can be used as a part of the attunement process to open the sushumna and hand channels, and also as the actual Dai Ko Myo symbol a student is receiving as their Level Three activating symbol. Confusing? Yes it can be if you are not a practicing teacher- but no worries, lets move on!

Level Three is the integration of truly living what you have been initiated into with Level One and Level Two, and putting those realizations and the healing of the first three chakras into conscious action through operating fearlessly from your heart. It bridges the gap between the first two chakras and the heart center. The more we practice being and living from the heart-space of Self love and authenticity, everything flows and the less we have to 'do' or 'effort' to make life work...

Ultimately Level Three assists in opening the heart chakra. It lights the way for more dense energies to be transmuted through the higher chakras.

Level Three brings great joy and the symbol name associated there 'Dai Ko Myo'- generally translates to GREAT BRIGHT LIGHT or GREAT WHITE LIGHT. That great bright light is the light of your heart which naturally abides. It becomes further awakened and calibrated in divine alignment with the love of the universe! ©TuesdayMayThomas

Reiki & Unwanted Energy Penetration

© Tuesday May Thomas 2016
Ten years ago I visited the 'Conscious Life Expo' in Los Angeles with a couple girlfriends. We attended lectures, strolled through aisles of vendors, and shared stories about our favorite mystical healing experiences. We stood in reverence, with eyes closed in front of a six-foot tall amethyst crystal, we ouhhed and ahhed at beautiful handmade jewelry and even took pictures of our auras. There were plenty of healers offering services. With so much to take in and look at, we decided to go in our own directions for a while and explore.

My shoulders were tight so I signed up with a chair masseuse for a ten minute chair massage. About five minutes in, I noticed the masseur was giving me more than a massage. I could energetically feel that he was doing something I had not given him permission to 'do' to me. The shoulder rub had stopped and his energy had shifted. I was suddenly aware of an odd feeling.

I was being Energetically Penetrated by his will!

I abruptly sat up to see he was standing in front of me with his eyes closed. He looked like he was in a trance whilst drawing spirals at me with his pointer finger. He then attempted to move the spirals into my energy body with his hand. I sat there watching while he 'gave me a massage'.

I could feel the energy he was trying to 'give me', but I din't want it. And because of my awareness, I did not take it on.

Why didn't I want what he was trying to give me?

Because a) it felt invasive, and b) I never asked for it!

I interrupted his action and called him out on it. I asked him why he decided to give me more than a massage. He answered that he was an energy healer. He could see that my crown chakra needed a healing, so he decided to heal it. But our agreement was for you to give me the gift of chair massage for ten minutes, which we both agreed to- and nothing more. In silence I gazed at him, feeling annoyed that I didn't get my full ten minute massage, yet aware of this important lesson for both of us. And in the next breath, he suddenly 'got it'. He knew he over stepped his boundaries with me. I namaste'd him and left without paying.

At that time of my life I had been attuned to Master Level Reiki for five years. In those five years I did a lot with Reiki, and still do! I held ongoing Reiki circles for my students, and shared Reiki healing with healthy everyday people of all ages and abilities. I facilitated a twice weekly Reiki program at a large nursing home and rehab facility, shared with bed bound patients in hospice, including coma patients in the hospital.

Why am I telling you this? Because I am going to make an assumption and guess that you are already attuned to Reiki if you are reading this blog, or you are interested in learning about it, or you are an energy healer/student/practitioner on some level. While I can speak for Usui Reiki as I have learned and teach it, it feels these guidelines serve most denominations of energy healing as a whole:

"Don't do something to or for someone without getting consent from them first."

Generally, when you are attuned to Usui Reiki your teacher will make it clear that you are a conduit for life-force energy and that it is the life-force energy that creates the correct conditions for others to heal by. It is not YOU doing the healing. It is the Reiki doing the healing through you.

You do not heal anyone with Reiki. We could almost go as far as saying you're not even a 'healer' when you are attuned with Reiki. What?? I hear you calling from the aisles! I know, I even sometimes say I am a healer, yet not because I share Reiki with others, mostly because I am healed. Yes I have learned and continue to learn so much about Reiki and how it can help heal the very life we live! I can share on that healing realm with others. Yet I know Reiki does the healing, not me. Reiki creates the correct conditions for others to heal by. Sure my presence helps, the space I hold helps- but long ago I let go of fishing for others, instead opting to teach others how to fish for themselves.

When you use Reiki daily on yourself, and have the opportunity to share it with many others in a variety of settings, you learn that you are the faucet, not the water. You learn you are not doing the healing, but you are a conduit for the healing energy of life-force to flow through you. You also learn a lot about a) the practice, b) your Self, c) others, and d) how to share this modality of healing with sacred integrity.

What is sacred about sharing energy work, you may ask? The most vital component is that it is asked for, or given permission for, or is granted the 'green light' by the recipient. In this way it is exchanged with honor, with potency and respect, and with no force of a will. At the most high point, it is something that is agreed upon between the recipient and the practitioner. There is no hidden agenda with Reiki. Its clear, clean and simple. Voila!

Reiki reminder - "Don't do something to or for someone without getting consent from them first."

With the practice of sharing Reiki, there is never a force of will. Yes, there are random circumstances such as having a client, a friend, a friend of a friend, or family member in the hospital, or in China- and getting a blip on your radar to send them Reiki, though they may be unconscious or unaware of it- but we will talk about that aspect of agreement through the field of Higher Self in our next post.

For now, what I desire to translate to you is the basic foundational teaching embodying the idea that Reiki is not a modality to be forced upon someone, or done without someones consent. I will add, I feel strongly about this notion with any given energy work, or healing modality.

This story brings me to what I am guided to share with you now.

At one of my recent Reiki Workshops, I got a clear download: Be open to doing a barter exchange with student 'X'. And by the end of the day, student 'X' asked if I was interested to share Reiki with her in exchange for trager and tui na massage. We had met a couple of times before this at other spiritual gatherings, so I had a basic sense of who this woman was. I also knew she was with her Level One Reiki attunement, given by another teacher. I had not experienced trager and tui na, and given my distinct download to work with her, I agreed.

The next Wednesday she came to my home and I shared an hour of Reiki healing with her. The following Friday I went to her place and was happy to receive some 'body work'. She had described the techniques she would share with me and my body was excited to try something new. There were short periods of time during the body-work where she paused before moving to the next limb when working on me and I could feel Reiki naturally flow without force. This will often happen naturally without trying

When you are attuned- Reiki will flow of its own accord, though we may not always be aware of it. I was aware of it and it felt good- those little bursts of Reiki I received while she steadily laid hands on my left foot before beginning to move to my right foot, and so on. I could feel it was a natural occurrence of the Reiki between us.

This said, at the very end of my session I could feel her performing a different kind of 'energy work' on me. One I had not given consent to. I sensed unwanted Energy Penetration- as I had so many years earlier at the Conscious Life Expo. In my fifteen years of being a Master Reiki Teacher, I knew what she was 'giving me' was not Reiki.

I asked her what it was she was doing at the end of the session? She laughingly shrugged it off saying  "I don't know,.... something to do with your chakras...". I immediately thought back to the not so 'conscious' masseur at the Conscious Life Expo. I knew it was not Reiki she was sharing with me. She knew it was not Reiki, yet she could not explain what it was she was doing, nor did she know what she was doing, and even more- she seemed to have no conscious awareness that IT was happening until I brought it up. This opportunity created a teaching moment for me to share with her, and so I did.

Readers please note-  *The above is an example of inappropriate energy exchange.

With so many energy workers, and infinite practices healers share- and so many people out there just trying to help, or be of service, sometimes the lines get blurred with what 'act' is really being of service and what is not. We want to help so bad, we will go out of our way to 'do good', meanwhile the good we think we should provide isn't always what is for the highest good of all, nor does it reflect the sweet wisdom guided in the still silence of what Reiki will actually guide you to do or not do on its behalf.

Bottom line, Reiki is non-invasive, whilst in my experience many other modalities that share healing, seem to have an approach with fewer boundaries.

Years ago, one of my Reiki apprentices sought a healing with a shaman. This shaman took her through a rebirthing session which led to him 'Energetically Penetrating' her by manipulating her aura to create the healing she required (which is normal in shamanic practices- for example a shaman might physically & psychically poke into your auric field and pull out a tumor cluster and either eat and transmute it, throw it in their 'energy cauldron' or 'energy fire' to be dissolved- or a number of other means), but he went further by actually putting his finger into her vagina in the heat of an intense healing moment. He had stepped outside of his honorable position as a shaman by becoming turned on by the energy they shared during the healing and he went too far.

While she did not agree to this as part of her healing session, many would argue she must have agreed to it on a psychic level, and so therein lies their karma. This is another point we will speak on later. For now, the point is this was not a part of the rebirthing session she thought she was going to get, but it happened all the same.

As healers and recipients of healing energy, be it Reiki or another modality, we are responsible to hold the light for ourselves and others.

We are responsible to speak up for ourselves when something does not feel right, and we are responsible to give this gift of free communication to our clients when we share Reiki or any other type of healing with them. We are responsible for sharing with the highest level of impeccability we can hold at any given time and space.
And so it is, for the highest good of all. © Tuesday May Thomas 2016
